How to add photos to the WordPress Photo Directory

I’m Sadie from the WordPress Photos Team.

I’m a contributor and a moderator and I’d like to show you how you can submit your own photos to the directory too.
It’s super easy and it’s very friendly community too.

As I type, we have 12,949 photos which have been freely submitted from all around the world.

To get started head over to wordpress.org and select the options for Community and Photo Directory.

Once you have done that, you’ll arrive on this screen.
In the top right hand corner, you’ll choose to either log in or register.

Log in using your own username and password for wordpress.org.

If you don’t have an account yet, you will need to register first.
It’s really quick and easy to do.

Once logged in, you will be able to choose to contribute your own photos. Hit the contribute link.

Now, before you start to submit your own photos, we would kindly ask that you, read the guidelines and the FAQs – frequently asked questions.

The guidelines will give you a really good idea of the type of photos that we’d like to receive and also those that we wouldn’t!
The frequently asked questions, give a little bit of background about the photo directory itself.

So let’s get started!

To upload your first photo, select one from your computer, hard drive or mobile phone using the choose file button.
Then add an Alternative Text.

The Alt. Text should be as descriptive as possible, this because is it for the benefit of those without sight.

Once you’ve done that, you will need to confirm all the options relating to licensing and usage by ticking all of the boxes. In doing so you are giving your express agreement to every point on the list before hitting the submit button. That’s really important too!

It may take a little time for your photo to upload, depending on your connection speed, but generally not too long.

Having submitted your photo, you’ll be taken to the submissions screen. You can see the photos that you have in the queue for moderation. You can see here at the moment. I have three photos waiting for moderation. It is possible to have up to five photos awaiting moderation at any one time.

Once your photo has been moderated, you will receive an email telling you if it has been either accepted or refused.
Please be sure follow the submission guidelines to minimise rejections.

When you have some photos accepted in to the directory, you’ll have an archive link to view your own photographs.
They appear in a gallery format. Here is a little look at mine.
