First WordPress School Day,
in Valencia, Spain.
We want to tell you about the incredible day we lived last November 10, 2023 at the Petxina Sports-Cultural Complex during the WordPress School Day, within the WordCamp Valencia 2023.
Our event in numbers
Total attendees
Total of 87 students interested in learning about different perspectives on WordPress.
53 students accompanied by 6 tutors
From two different High Schools where they were taking the following courses: Web App Development and Cross-Platform App Development.
28 Adult students
Students who are currently taking a Web Design workshop of a government unemployment program.
2 Tracks
The sessions were organized in two tracks, a Basic and an Advanced track.
5 Instructors
We counted on the involvement of five instructors, all of them deeply engaged in the WordPress Community.
7 Hours
Both tracks had a time setting of three hours. Following these sessions, we dedicated one hour to addressing open questions from participants.
The WordPress School Day at WordCamp Valencia 2023 was more than an educational event; it was an experience that united the WordPress community in a day full of learning, inspiration and new ideas from young people who already know how to use this software…
Learning Tracks: Basic and Advanced
Basic Track
In the basic track, Patricia Navarro and Fernando Puente guided all the students through the essential WordPress basics.
We learned about domains, hosting (with an analysis of prices and functionalities), and installed WordPress for the first time. Thanks to whom? Well, our sponsors who gave us a hosting space and domains for all attendees.
Also, after this, we continued the basic configuration, addressing general settings, reading, writing, menus and, of course, the detailed explanation of plugins and themes in WordPress.
After lunch, Patricia and Fernando continued with visual layouts, going through the different types of layouts such as Gutenberg and others.
The following sessions were part of the basic track:
- Domains, hosting and WordPress installation
- Basic settings, plugins and themes
- Visual layout designers
Advanced Track
Simultaneously, in the advanced track, Teresa Sáez educated us with a lot of patience on advanced configuration and implementation of security layers in WordPress.
Then, Flavia Bernárdez Rodríguez dazzled us with a detailed explanation on Full Site Editing, unraveling the new WordPress features that allow us to edit every corner of our website: global styles, block themes, new blocks and theme.json.
Shortly after, Núria Ramoneda gave us a different perspective with “Snippets per a la teva web” (in Catalan), where we discovered how to create lines of code to enhance the functions of our site.
The following sessions were part of the advanced track:
- Advanced settings and security in WordPress
- Full Side Editing
- Snippets
Positive growth
After discussing the last doubts in both tracks, we closed the session in the Salón de Actos with Érica Aguado leading the farewell. With joy and pride, we handed out the training certificates to each student.
We named them one by one, and it was a very exciting moment to see their smiles when they received this small recognition from the community.
We ended the morning, before the Community Day (which many of the attendees of this WPSchool Day joined), with a healthy lunch with legume salad, roasted chicken and sustainable options such as seitan for vegetarians and vegans.
It was an ideal space to continue sharing experiences, networking and consolidating the bonds that were forged during this unforgettable day.
